Behind the byline
Curiosity, with its sleeves rolled up.
I write about the stories behind our decisions: what moves us, what stops us, and what one choice can set in motion.
Leonie Stanley is a South African writer, professional reader, and enthusiastic follower of historical rabbit holes. She writes from KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, where the sea is close and there is always another question waiting to be investigated.
After decades spent untangling complex systems in the motor industry, she brings the same stubborn curiosity to the page: look past the noise, find the pattern, and tell the truth plainly. Her work moves between human behaviour, neglected history, nonfiction, and fiction shaped by consequential decisions.
She is currently writing What’s Hanging From Your Clip Strip Today?, a humane exploration of procrastination as emotional avoidance rather than laziness. Her fiction asks a related question from another angle: what happens when the choice we postpone finally catches up with us?
Reading is part pleasure, part apprenticeship, and occasionally a full-scale investigation. Books are loved, argued with, learned from, and—when necessary—their villains are placed under formal review.
The best stories do more than tell us what happened. They make us ask why—and what we might have done differently.
